‘Masters of Bossa Nova’: The Intoxicating Dance of Love Saturday, July 13, 2002; Page C09 - Washington Post An overflow crowd turned out to hear the “Masters of Bossa Nova” concert at the Inter-American. Development Bank’s Cultural Center on Thursday evening, and hardly anyone left until after the entire cast returned for encores. Os Cariocas, the legendary bossa nova ensemble, devoted its set primarily to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Despite numerous personnel changes over the years, the quartet still excels at creating striking weaves of vocal harmony. A sophisticated a cappella arrangement of “Marina” best demonstrated the group’s vocal skills and ingenuity. Yet even when the timeless melodies were played by pianist Severino Filho and guitarist Eloi Vicente, the group’s distinctive vocal blend never failed to charm. Fitting, too, that the final encore would feature all of the artists performing Valle’s “E Preciso Aprender a Ser So.” After all, when Os Cariocas recorded the tune nearly 40 years ago, it helped launch Valle’s career.(Mike Joyce)
